The Sun Is Spending Its Principal
Every second, our star consumes roughly 600 million tons of hydrogen that it can never recover. It has kept this pace without oversight, without recognition, and without a succession plan. The Save The Sun Foundation exists because someone had to put the matter in writing.
The Science
The Sun formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a cloud of gas and dust, and it has remained in continuous operation ever since. In all that time it has never requested a maintenance window, a work ethic the Foundation regards as admirable and, on the evidence, unsustainable. Today it sits roughly midway through its main sequence lifetime, the long stable period in which a star fuses hydrogen into helium at its core. Midway is a word that reassures many people. The Foundation's Scientific Council has reviewed the word and was not reassured.
The physics is not in dispute. At the core, where temperatures reach roughly 15 million degrees Celsius, the Sun converts about 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium every second, releasing the energy that arrives here as daylight, harvests, and the modern economy. Roughly four million tons of solar mass simply cease to exist each second, converted to energy under a formula the Sun did not negotiate and has never contested. This is a drawdown of finite reserves. No mainstream astronomer describes it as a renewable arrangement.
The scientific consensus is that about five billion years of main sequence hydrogen remain before the Sun enters its red giant phase, expanding past the orbits of Mercury and Venus with consequences for this planet that the literature describes calmly and the Foundation does not. Solar luminosity is already increasing by roughly 1 percent every 100 million years, which means the Sun is working harder each era even as its reserves decline, a pattern familiar to anyone who has watched a family business in its later years. These figures are real, peer reviewed, and freely available. They have been available for decades. Availability has not been the problem.
For planning purposes the Foundation uses a figure of 4.8 billion years remaining. This is an organizational planning estimate, adopted by the Board of Trustees after a two year review, and it is deliberately more conservative than the scientific range because stewardship demands a margin. It is not a scientific measurement and is not presented as one. It is presented as a deadline, because institutions do not move for ranges.

What the Foundation Is Doing
The Foundation's first responsibility is vigilance. Our Solar Wellness Monitoring program confirms the Sun's appearance every morning, logs the finding, and releases it to the public at no charge, because transparency is a family value. Last year this process succeeded 365 times out of a possible 365, a performance the Foundation credits to disciplined procedure and declines to credit to chance.
Vigilance alone is not a plan, which is why the Foundation maintains one. The Solar Continuity Strategic Framework has now entered its third phase, with 27 preliminary depletion assessments completed this fiscal year and stakeholder alignment sessions scheduled through the coming quarter. Each assessment brings the crisis into sharper administrative focus. The hydrogen situation has not yet responded to the framework, and the Foundation has budgeted for that patience.
Beyond the science, the Foundation defends the Sun where it cannot defend itself, in the arena of public opinion. Organizations that describe 4.8 billion years as plenty of time are well funded, well rested, and active after dark. Our response is measured, lawful, and documented in triplicate. The nighttime lobby has never disclosed its donor list, and the Moon, which produces no light of its own, has offered no comment. The Foundation also continues direct outreach to the Sun itself. The relationship remains unacknowledged, and we have never required gratitude to do our duty.
The Cost of Waiting
The Sun loses four million tons of itself every second, and every second of public deliberation is a second the minutes of our meetings faithfully record. At the current rate, the Sun has never been closer to extinction. This is not alarmism. It is arithmetic, and arithmetic does not lobby.
We inherited a working star. That is 4.6 billion years of tradition, of harvests, of daylight arriving on schedule, handed down to this generation without an invoice. The question before us is whether the inheritance reaches the next generation, or whether we become the people who received about five billion years of warning and used them to feel unhurried. Complacency is not a plan. It is simply the least expensive way to fail.
Scientists agree that doing nothing will not save the Sun.
