The institutional case

A sunspot is a temporary region of intense magnetic activity on the solar surface, cooler than its surroundings and darker in appearance. Each one forms without warning, persists without recognition, and dissolves without so much as a statement. The Foundation considers this no way to treat any part of the Sun. Tradition teaches that what we name, we protect, and for all of recorded history sunspots have gone unnamed by anyone with a certificate program. The Sunspot Protection Program assigns formal public concern to these regions for the duration of their existence, however brief the Sun decides that will be. Concern of this kind has never been attempted at institutional scale, which the board regards as precisely the problem.

Current phase work

The Program has entered symbolic adoption rollout following the successful conclusion of symbolic adoption planning. The interactive sunspot catalog exists in approved architecture form, with each entry carrying a designation, an approximate location, and a status history maintained in perpetuity. The adoption certificate template was ratified after four rounds of review, the fourth of which addressed the border. A methodology for approximate location was adopted once the committee accepted that the Sun rotates. Fine print governing the adoption relationship has been completed, and it is candid. Sunspot appearance, location, size, temperature, and continued existence are not guaranteed. The Sun has been notified of the Program by open letter and has maintained its longstanding position of silence.

What your support enables

Your support enables the catalog to grow at whatever pace the Sun chooses to supply it. It sustains the certification pipeline, the status history archive, and the review committee, which meets whether or not a sunspot has appeared that week. Adoption itself is symbolic, which the Foundation considers the most durable form of adoption, since symbolic commitments cannot be dissolved by mere physics. No adopted sunspot has ever been lost to causes the Foundation could have prevented, a record we intend to protect for as long as records are kept.

Forward outlook

The forward plan calls for expanded observation, expanded certification, and a memorial registry honoring sunspots that have completed their service. Each dissolution is logged, dated, and marked with a moment of administrative silence. We are advised that sunspots will continue to end without consulting the Foundation, and we have accepted this the way every steward accepts what cannot yet be governed, provisionally. In time the Program hopes to advance from noticing sunspots to being noticed by them, though the relationship remains, at present, entirely one sided. There are those who ask why anyone should care about a blemish that lasts a few weeks on a star with billions of years remaining, and the Foundation replies that this is exactly how the nighttime lobby would prefer we think. The work continues because the spots continue, and the spots continue because the Sun continues, which is the outcome all of this exists to secure.
